Wouldnt you prefer those odds?THE BACK STORY A REAL LIFE EXAMPLELet me share a brief story from my own personal experience about what Im referring to. Several yes, several years ago, after I had stayed home with my daughter for her first year I decided I was ready to head back to the working world. I started applying to all sorts of staffing, recruiting, and HR positions that I saw online and on job boards. I applied to everything I probably submitted 50 applications online within one week. But what I also did was look up every single staffing agency within a 30-mile radius of my house. Thats how far I was willing to commuteso thats how far I decided to lookI used the phone book and the Internet and pulled up about 35 agencies within that driving distance. I mailed each one of them a copy of my resume and titel letter. From that mailing, which took me only about two hours to complete (printing, stuffing, labeling, and mailing), I received five phone calls. I completed two phone interviews and three in-person interviews. Two offers later, the position I accepted was an employment manager role heading a new account with a international device manufacturer. The position was created exclusively for me. I never would have had the opportunity had I not completed the mailing.Of all the interviews I had, none of the positions had been advertis ed. Theyd all been internal openings that only the branch manager or business owner knew about. In other words, they were hidden.IS IT IMPOSSIBLE?Given my story I just shared about mailing my resume and cover letter out to staffing agencies, does that method seem impossible? Not to me it seems almost too easy. The great part about it is that so few people are using the method, your visibility increases 100-fold. Even if someone else completed a mailing and was looking for the exact same position you were (highly unlikely) your competition wouldnt be HUNDREDSitd be one. Isnt that encouraging? Using a direct mail job search method isnt impossibleand its very simple. In fact, Ill give you some tips to get you started.HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN DIRECT MAIL CAMPAIGN1. First, and probably the most obvious, make sure your resume and cover letter are top-notch. You want to make an outstanding first impression. Take the time to address your cover letter to the actual person who will be reading i t. Thanks to the Internet, decision makers are a little easier to locate these days. A simple Google search, company website review, or LinkedIn profile search can turn up a decision makers name. Do your best to have a name, and address your cover letter to that person make sure your envelope is addressed to that person as well.2. Locate organizations you want to work for. Commonly referred to as targeting. You want to target organizations that would hire someone with your expertise. For me, it was simple because, before having my daughter, I had been in staffingand I knew I wanted to return to that field. I knew I wanted a recruitment role with an agency, so that was what I targeted. What you need to do is find companies within an acceptable driving distance that are in your field of interest. The great thing is, if youre an outside salesperson youre not confined by industry. The same could be true for other fields like IT for example. Many companies have IT staff you dont necessar ily have to live near IBM or Microsoft. Find as many companies as you can, and get their mailing addresses.3. Now that you have the decision makers name and the companys mailing address, hand-address the envelope. There are a couple of ways you can do your mailing. You could use address labels and nice business ivory envelopes or you could even slide the envelopes through an inkjet printer. Very classy presentation, but also looks a lot like business mail or junk mail. If you really want them to open the letter hand-address the envelope. Want to up the ante? Try one of these tips Mail your resume and cover letter in a card-sized envelope. Who doesnt like getting a card or thank-you letter in the mail? Curiosity will cause them to open it. Put it in a large orange mailer envelope. Again, curiosity on your side because theyll surely want to know who could be sending them something thats hand addressed If you really want their attention, use a priority mail envelope. Your resume wouldn t be folded, so it would be a clean presentation. And again, I think this really capitalizes on the persons curiosityand simultaneously makes the documents inside the priority mail very important to open as soon as possible.4. Once youve mailed your documents, be prepared for phone interviews. Depending on how many you send out, you can expect about a 10%-20% response satz depending on your area of expertise. Maybe even greater if your resume and cover letter are really sharp and attention-getting and your cover letter includes a PS. That really speaks to the value you can offer their organization.KEEP TRACKI highly recommend utilizing some means of tracking so you know where youve sent your documents. This is important for two reasons. First, when you get the call you certainly dont want to say, and who are you again and what company are you with? That doesnt bode well for you at all. Because ultimately thats what theyre trying to ascertain. Are you the best person for the position and company? Of course you are And dont hesitate to tell them why.And that, my friends, is how you can place yourself in the position of being the only one to apply. Youre applying to jobs that are hiddenthat either arent created yet or that no one else knows about yet. The beauty is that youre reaching the decision maker before they have to take the dreadful action of posting it online and fielding the massive amount of responses. Like I stated in my first article, given the opportunity to avoid the unmanageable influx of applicants and forego the deluge, most people will choose to do just that. Thats why most positions (80% or better) are filled through re ferrals. What are the success rates?Before you start any medical procedure, you should understand the prognosis or success rate. So much is understood about IVF, but many dont completely understand the efficacy. Simply stated, success of the procedure is tied closely to the age of the female patient. Women are born with all of the eggs theyll ever have. As we age, our egg count decreases in quanti ty, as well as quality. A decrease in quantity means we have fewer eggs, but the decrease in quality matters a lot, too. Dr. Shahine explains that as eggs age, fewer of them are able to complete the complex genetic changes required to become a healthy baby. So, how do you predict your own success with IVF? The reasons for success are multifactorial and Shahine says before undergoing IVF, age and estimated number of eggs likely to be retrieved (based on an AMH blood test) are the best ways to predict success. She says the more eggs that are retrieved, the better ones chances of a successful pregnancy. Your age and reproductive health are both factors, but so is the clinic you choose specifically their embryology lab. However, according to the CDC, women under the age of 35 on average have about a 40 percent chance of a live birth using IVF. For women who are 33-36, the success rates are about 34 percent. Women who are 38-40 have about a 25 percent chance at a live birth utilizing IV F, while women who are 40-42 have about a 15 percent chance at achieving a live birth. 2. How old is too old?We all see celebrities have babies well into their late forties and beyond. But if you paid attention at all in biology class, you know that women reach peak fertility in their twenties. Dr. Shahine says that her patients see celebrities on the cover of magazines celebrating their pregnancies in their late forties or fifties, but most women conceiving at that age are often using donor eggs.Fertility begins to decline drastically in females late 30s and Dr. Shahine mentioned that while there is no magic age where fertility ends, IVF has a very low chance of success in women age 42 and older. Its because of this that many clinics have an age-cutoff for women using their own eggs in their mid-forties. While there is not a high probability, Dr. Shahine says she has, had patients have success with their own eggs in their mid-40s, but it usually takes multiple stimulation cycles an d more women are unsuccessful than successful. However, women can have high chances of success with pregnancy with the use of donor eggs well into their forties and even fifties. 3. Why are all the shots needed and what do they do?fruchtwein people take about three shots a day and then one at the end of the cycle. The daily shots are subcutaneous (a small needle) and the shot at the end of the cycle is an intramuscular shot in the butt. These shots are gonadotropins that a womans body naturally makes each month to recruit and ovulate one egg. The goal of IVF is to recruit more than one egg, so these shots have a higher dose of gonadotropins to help recruit multiple eggs. In other words, the medication makes a bunch of eggs grow in one cycle, increasing your chances at pregnancy.4. Does it hurt?First, it makes sense t o understand what IVF is on a high level. A patient will undergo a number of tests to make sure they are a good candidate. Then, they will begin taking medications that stimulate the ovaries. The medication is self-injected each day for about 10 days. During this time the doctors will monitor the response to the medication using blood work and ultrasounds. When the eggs have grown to the appropriate size, the patient undergoes a minor surgical procedure to retrieve the eggs and mischung them with sperm in the lab. The process is generally well tolerated by most. Dr. Shahine says her patients often report that it it wasnt as bad as I thought it would be.Shots can be uncomfortable but manageable, and the egg retrieval is often done with sedation to minimize any discomfort, she says. Most people feel some side effects from the medication bloating is the most commonly reported symptom but many say they are back to normal within a few days to a week. 5.
